On August 8th, members of The 70th Explorers Garrison and Squad 66: The Temple Raiders attended the MDA Summer Camp at Bear River Ranch in Rolla, Missouri for Star Wars Day. Boba Fett, 4 Imperial Stormtroopers, and Lord Vader comprised the raiding party. Our presence was announced to the children as we made our way to the central building. We entered the room full of campers amid shouts of “We need a head count! There are strangers on the grounds!” As our appearance was a surprise to the children, we were met with some resistance. The campers brandished light sabers in true Jedi fashion in an attempt to thwart the Empire’s imminent victory. But at the end of the day, the Empire won the hearts of all the campers. The mission was a success.

Contact with the Camp counselors was made afterwards and we answered questions about the 501st Legion. We received camp T-shirts and generous accolades from the camp staff. They told us how we had brought smiles to the faces of children who hadn’t smiled much before we arrived. They were pleased to hear that there is a 501st Legion presence in Missouri and Kansas as there are other camps that they’d like us to attend. We hope to hear from them in the future to set up more visits to these worthwhile events.

Special thanks to Counselors and the camp staff for their support and thanks to the 70th Explorers and Squad 66 members who attended including: Keith Davis as an Imperial Stormtrooper; Andy McCormick as an Imperial Stormtrooper; Jeff Woodward as Boba Fett; our Commanding Officer, Curt Stanfill as an Imperial Stormtrooper; Squad Leader Brandon Lauthern as an Imperial Stormtrooper; and Tim Bremer as Darth Vader. We also appreciate the efforts the MDA for providing these camps for a great bunch of kids.
