Disenfecting Costumes (killing the funk of Fett)

Post by Cmndr Falken »

Many costumes are impractical or impossible to clean. Many others are just expensive to have dry cleaned after every event.

I think I have found a very good way to clean all kinds of costumes after each use.
Grapefruite seed extract (GSE) is a mild anti-bacterial agent.

There are many natural all-purpose cleaners, but my favorite is a mix of GSE (grapefruit seed extract) and tea tree oil. I add 15-20 drops of GSE to a spray bottle of water, plus a drop or 2 of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil not only leaves a fresh scent but it is also an natural antiseptic with antibacterial properties. Grapefruit seed extract is all natural, non-toxic even in large doses, and is 20 times more powerful than Clorox bleach. I use this solution for everything-the kitchen counters, the kids toys and bathtub, toilets, etc. I also use it to spray down fabrics (like you would febreese). I have tried it on tons of different fabrics, it has never spotted or stained anything. It is a clear liquid.

You can find both the GSE and the tea tree oil at health food/nutrition stores. One bottle of GSE will cost you less than 20 dollars and the tea tree oil can be found for less than 10. This small investment will make over 100 bottles of spray cleaner.

The woman that sewed April's costume recommended misting in Vodka. She said it's oderless and it kills germs and odor causing bacteria. she said they do that with all of their theatre costumes. I don't know if it works but if you have extra vodka lying around its worth a shot...hehe heh get it shot....

Oh hell, just bring the Vodka too. I'm sure we can make use of all these items in one form or another.
