Chroming

Post by cblackthorne »

Hello,

Do any of our propmakers in the garrison do Chroming or have a good source for chroming ABS costume pieces?

Thanks,
Chris

I read how to do this a long time ago and If I remember correctly you basically have to have a special paint that lays down a conductive surface on the plastic. Then you would be able to use standard electro-plating techniques on to that surface, I will try to find that website that shows how it is done.

Ask a local automotive paint shop if they can do it first and what they would charge. A good chrome paint can get expensive...especially with all the layering work to get the shine you want to obtain. The metallic crap they have at the hardware store isn't going to do the trick or won't give you the luster you are wanting to obtain for the cylon scheme. Here's a nice little demonstration with a Vader lid:

Also, take a look here:

You probably can find other alternatives, but this is what I came up with at this time.

http://www.eastwood.com/ew-liquid-chrome.html this place is well known for automotive restoration products, this might be a source too. :wavey:
