Dr. Victor Fries **Pic Heavy**

Post by TK 3181 » Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:28 pm

You ever wonder why, even though he has a PHD, Victor Fries didn't become Dr. Freeze? I guess he didn't do his time at evil medical school or something.

Anyway, I am working on a Mr. Freeze costume, as some of you know. It has been waay too long in the planning stages, but now I am actually making some physical progress.
  • I have the goggles nearly completed. (Just need to engineer the lights, final assembly, and paint.)

Completed detailed plans for the "Cold Gun" and some of the materials to start sanding and shaping the molds for it.

I have sourced the "neckseal" base for the dome and plan on purchasing it very soon.

The plexiglass dome remains the big fat mystery. I plan on vacforming one on my own, simply because I refuse to pay $250 for a premade one. (It was not easy to even find one!) So, I'll be trying my had at that very soon.
If anyone has any advice, it is most welcome. Oh, and before anyone gets witty and makes a post, AHHHNOLD DID NOT AND NEVER WILL BE ANY REPRESENTATION OF MR. FREEZE. (Joel Shumacher owes the world a HUGE apology for that steaming turd.) I will post pics as I make progress, perhaps this thread
will help me stay on track..... :D
Here is the figure that I'm using for reference:

and here are the "Cold Gun," plans I drew up.

Good luck with this.... I have a big fish bowl not in use if that would help for the dome. You would just have to hold your breath.

After playing through Arkham, I kinda wanna start on a Scarecrow or Riddler outfit. Maybe moreso Scarecrow; Riddler tends to whines too much, like a little bitch...

I would sure like to. If I cut some corners, and my dome works out, I shouldnt have a problem. I figure this will be a constantly upgraded costume. I am making it the best I can with what I have lying around just to get a good basic costume, and then I plan on fine tuning all the individual parts as I wear it and field test it. I am not going for an exact replica of any specific depiction, but more of a general combination of my own design... As long as I do not get to obsessive over the details, I should be able to make it all in a timely manner. (fingers crossed!)

Lookin good! The bucket is a good idea. I remember the guy at DCon. His costume was simply awesome and one of my favorite. At closer inspection I noticed he used simple items such as elbow pads, knee guards, bucket halves. It was very impressive how he crafted all these pieces to make the look of Freeze come to life.

Sooooo...Minor setback. Tonight, Keith and I attempted to reverse draw the Dome. There was catastrophic failure, but not where we had anticipated. As we sat the heated plastic in the mouth of the bucket and switched on the vacuum, the acrylic formed a perfect dome and started to draw down into the bucket as we expected. Then, the bucket collapsed like a soda can and the dome had nowhere to go. we turned off the vac and yanked the now malformed dome from the mouth of the bucket. Attempt number one was not successful, but we learned something. You must have a very stable vacuum chamber to reverse draw thick Acrylic. Thinner material, a stronger chamber, and a little more enthusiasm should make for a better dome. Here's our pics from tonight:

I am still amazed at the clarity of the failed dome. It gives me hope that vision will be really good!

Luckily this was a scrap piece of acrylic that cost $0. :D Live and learn ;)
