Re: Spray and Pray: A Z-6 WIP
Got a lot further today.
The second circle piece is secured in place. I had to hand drill this from the inside; 4 holes.
Enclosed the receiver.
Added the receiver "pipe". Note that I had to remove the front receiver base mount. The upper pipe, photo 2, will be used as part of the handle. The handle in photo 3 isn't mounted.

Attachment piece templates #1-4:
Upper Sight Rail process. This tool was place over the two circles and then used to make a template.
The completed Sight Rail template (Its off centered for the photo.):
Oh and a note on the spinning of the barrels. In its current configuration, the barrels can be spun by hand. All inter-circle pieces have been drilled to allow either an attachment nut & bolt (currently in use) or to allow for a rod attached to a motor.
Also, note that the way I have placed the first outer circle makes it difficult to disassemble. The first outer circle has to overlap the vent tube. The inter-circle in the barrels (inside the green abs) is attached to the inter-circle in the vent tube, which is screwed in place.

It's a Pin Contour Gauge. I found this particular one at Lowe's: http://www.lowes.com/pd_14154-56005-837 ... $Ntt=gaugeDrago Lordist wrote:okay that's pretty sweet, what is that tool called and where can I get one?Dwootan wrote: Upper Sight Rail process. It's been real handy for duplication with the lathe. I'm sure there are several additional uses for it, like making a sight rail template.

I got some more work done today and the scroll saw was used a lot.

To me, it looks like the handle attachment piece is to high. However, it looks right according to my reference picture. I might make an executive decision and lower it.

Re: Spray and Pray: A Z-6 WIP
I've not had a lot of time to work on this since my last post. We undergoing a complete remodel of our living area, which is almost done. However, I did manage to make it to the work bench today.
Sight rail refit: I didn't like how the rail mounted onto the piece, so I found a spare light fixture part and used it. In the below pictures, you'll notice the test fitting. The silver coloring is to show you all which holes I drilled. Also, I drilled out the center hole to allow a little room for the mounting bolt.
Barrel Assembly automation: I decided that if I'm making this, then I need to make it correctly. Using the circle cutter / drill bit as a model, I figured out how to make the barrel assembly turn. Right now, I'm working out the stabilization of the barrel assembly to the receiver.
Here's the basic idea: a bolt mounted and using a drill for the motor.
The screw is bolted onto the barrel assembly circle piece and will run through the receiver to the handle. I had a spare drill that will serve as the handle and the motor. (Just wanting for the battery to arrive.)
Here's the barrel assembly:
Here's the receiver:
Using the earlier shown short bolt on the barrel assembly, I was able to get it to turn as desired. When I began testing the thread rod with two screws, I ran into the problem of loosening the bolts as the barrel turned. So to fix the problem, I used a ton of threadlock to hold it in place.
The plan is to have this completed by Comicon. I probably won't have the lights finish by then, so I'm focusing on the movement.

I made it back to the work bench today:

I don't have it mounted to the correct drill, yet. As you will notice the current drill makes some noise. Also, the sight rail solved my stabilization issue and it's not fully mounted in the video. That is why I'm holding it up and why it seems kind of loose.

could always fix the looseness with a tongue and groove on the front cuttout. would keep it tight to the top bar and still allow it to spin freely.Dwootan wrote: I don't have it mounted to the correct drill, yet. Re: Spray and Pray: A Z-6 WIP
Okay, I ran into a problem. To make a long story short: "Now young drill charger, you will die!"
Yep, I almost started an electrical fire while recharging the drill battery and the charger melted. The sad thing is, is that the battery that caused it was going to be the spare battery for trooping. Anyway, now I'm off to "MacGyver" something else for a power source.

Re: Spray and Pray: A Z-6 WIP
Okay, I figured it out. I took an older drill, cut off the handle, hooked it up to a flashlight battery, and I now have power (again).
I have about 4 spare drills around here with no power source / charger. This was the "weak" drill and will allow me to finish this without having a drill handle for the rear handle. The new plan is to mount the drill and the battery inside the receiver tube. A switch will then be mounted like a trigger on the handle.

Re: Spray and Pray: A Z-6 WIP
I've encased the receiver with the first round of bondo and still need to apply some glazing putty to fill in the gaps for that smooth appearance.
I decided to add an additional battery and run them parallel to power the drill motor. That said, I'm making a modification to the original design of the Z-6. On the lower side of the receiver and under the attachment pieces will be two "battery compartments". That way, I don't have to take apart the entire back end to change the batteries. This also means that I'll have to remake the receiver base mounts to accommodate the design change.
I'm still hoping to have this ready for Comicon (next weekend).
Tasks left:
1. Finish the receiver putty detailing
2. Mount the drill inside the receiver
3. Add handle and surrounding detail
4. Solder the wires
5. Make battery compartments
6. Remake Receiver base mounts
7. Add center coil to barrel assembly
7. make final adjustments
8. Prime and Paint
9. Add Lights to the barrel assembly (might be after comicon)
We'll see how far I get tomorrow.

Re: Spray and Pray: A Z-6 WIP
Why is it that every time I have a WIP, I need up cutting my hand. It was almost a "Cloud City" maneuver. But not to worry, I'm still in one piece.
I was forced to take a break and thought I'd give you all a brief summary of the status:
1. All the Wal-Marts in the Northland are out of Glazing Putty.
2. The drill motor is mounted.
3. I figured out the battery compartments. Lowe's had some empty quart paint cans.
I mounted the paint cans on both sides of the receiver. It kind of looks like the MG-15 doppeltrommel magazine from ANH. Reference Pic:
My cell phone photo card is full or I'd post some pics. I'll get some photos up later today. Okay, back to work.
