uggghhh..

Post by TK5544 »

Well I put the armor on last night for the Higginsville down town street Halloween event and I am cracking.

Like cracks on the thighs, belt, butt and calves. SOooo.... Who has a good resource for everything cept the helmet, hell I'll even buy another helmet if I have to, but I basically need to be rebuilt maybe turn it into a sandy and use the new for a clean mean butt trooper machine.

Let me know a good spot to buy something inexpensive, xmas is coming up and budget is a bit tighter this time of year.

Thanks all

My belt is cracking too. I am going to get a canvas belt.

My lovely wife already beat you to that one, she said and I quote 'your butt is cracking.....and NO its not supposed to be there this time'
She was prepared for the inevitable retort but beat me to it.

But seriously my armor is cracking in several places along the visible areas and its starting to look bad and I know I spent way too much the first time on the set so I am sure I can find something a little less in cost even if it is the same quality since the other nicer more accurate stuff isn't going to fit my, shall we say growing horizons.

the method we have used down in Springfield has been drill a hole at the end of the crack so it doesn't continue. Then we make a paste out of abs we grind up into powder and abs glue and fill it. It works pretty well. The other way is plumbers epoxy on the inside to reinforce it and bondo and paint the outside. All of which is a pain if you don't know what you are doing.

side tip: don't put on/bend your armor wile its cold. If you leave it out in the car at night during the winter then put it on in the morning it will be brittle and might crack or break.

Id love to come down but alas work says no heh, but yes those are great tips I might have to try that, I have alot of resources on hand to fix all sorts of things down at the shop, since I am working on restoring a fiberglassed body car.

Actually Josh, after drilling the stopping hole for the crack, I mix scrap bits of ABS with ACETONE. You have to stir FOREVER to make your paste, but once it is all melted, it works really good for filling cracks and even drill holes. Once the ACETONE has evaporated, the ABS returns to it's original form.

Tips:
  • Make sure you mix this paste in a GLASS container. (Don't worry, the plastic will pop right off of the glass once it sets.)

Use a metal or wooden mixing stick/applicator (I usually us a common nail)

Use more paste than you think you need as it does shrink as the ACETONE evaporates

Buy your ACETONE in the Nail polish area in Walmart instead of the Hardware section. It's about half the price. (Make sure it's 100% ACETONE)
