HIC Build

Post by Dwootan »

I figured that winter is just around the corner, so I needed a winter project. The project is Han Solo in Carbonite aka HIC.

I was lucky enough to get into King Jawa's holiday run, so the build is primary the box. Here's one of KJ's photos:

This will probably not be 100 % screen accurate. The control panels aka Volvo Instrument Clusters seem to be runnning around $1K for everything needed. So, I will either go with a style similar to the 1990's Prop Release or a custom design similar to the prop seen in the movies.

Now, I just have to decide on TESB or ROTJ style for the box.

Well I finally got all the measurements down. Now it's off to find a straight board!

Just remembered that I took photos of the HIC at the Star Wars In Concert event in KC (2009).

I'm liking these controls panels. While they might not be the hero panel, they add the needed detail.

I received some questions on how I am handling this build. So, I made a drawing detailing it.

Image

The brown colored items will be cut and constructed. Blue colored items will be cut and placed together. The white body parts will be secured to blue colored items. The black sections are hollowed. The measurements listed are close estimates.

Currently, I am debating the use of MDF boards or wood. I want the finish item to be light weight and strong enough to withstand handling. I will have to use a heat gun on any wood used. The main reason is the weather conditions, it will prevent warping of the wood. Of course, it will take some putty and primer to cover the wood grain.

Also, I'm waiting for the remaining snow to melt in my truck bed.

Trying to determine if I should invest in the actual instrument panel or use a similar panel that was imported into the US. There are 8 panels needed.

Here's the original hero panel:

That was made from a Volvo 343 / 345 panel:

Here's a Volvo 240 panel, which has a similar look:

Here's a Ford Truck panel, which has a similar look:

Do you think you can splice them together, make one panel from the two?

Something like that is what I'm thinking. Still debating it.

Once I get this figured out, the rest of the build should go pretty quickly.

You could buy one accurate cluster and then make resin casts of it.

That's where I'm having my problem. I can't seem to find anyone that has one; prop makers seem to be out or their molds are no longer good. :(
