Anyone here have one or looked into one? Stumbled across it by accident and would be useful especially for prop building I would have to admit. No one has said anything about it on the RPF but it could very helpful......There is a local company that sales them but starting off that high for one is my concern, enough interest then it would be worth it.

Two of our pending members have one. Hammer space located in brookside, has a few and are local experts on 3d printers. They have an open house where you fan check out their equipment . From my understanding most 3d prints are only good for prototypes and making a mold from.

Someone on the FISD forum claimed 3d printing is just like recasting....although I don't agree with that myself.

I want to know how its like recasting, you have to take the time to Draw it out in a computer. Unless someone shares their file to you.

Well they claim that someone can scan an existing set of armor say TM and reproduce it. Of course they can take scans from still shots and scale them to size and someone will still call it recasting. I say if they are going through the trouble of getting the printer and doing the scans then making molds from that its not a recast at all. You know someone is always going to get butthurt over something no matter what you do.

If I won the lottery, my dream setup would be built around 3D modeling in an open-source environment, then 3D printing to making molds. Get the profit out of prop making, and make it so anyone with a 3D printer can produce their own molds and get whatever pieces they want... I don't have the time/space/technical expertise though so the only way it'd ever happen is if I could buy my way in through a lottery win...

I've been to Hammerspace a couple times, and there's a similar setup at the Business and Technology Campus on Front Street too. I've talked to people there and elsewhwere, and the whole thing is technically possible, and both those workshops even have the parts (3D printers and vac tables) in one place, it's the digital modesl that are the issue...

Yep we are in the process of getting one running here in G66

I would like to direct you all to this web site. This is a free and non free share site. This is not the same as recasting this is sharing designs.

And I might know something about 3D printing here is some of what I have done.

When you do/did the rings where they sizable?

The beauty of 3d printers is that you can draw one thing and you can scale it as needed for printing. I printed that fighter and one half that size all from the same drawing. So the ring would be the same way. Just scale it to the ring size desired.
